FASM 19 th Annual User Meeting: A New Beginning. In view of the ongoing work to prepare for MAX IV and the already vast increase in new users at MAX, the annual user meeting will take on a new form starting this year. The aim is to place a heavier focus on the research carried out at MAX-lab, and at the same time to provide a forum for young researchers (graduate students in particular) where they can give oral presentations of their work. These presentations will be short (12+3 min) similar to the concept of the American Physical Society meetings, in order to give as many students as possible the opportunity to give a talk in front of an professional audience. The intent is to attract the vast majority of the young researchers active at MAX-lab and make the user meeting the natural place to catch up on the various research topics carried out at MAX-lab while providing opportunity for networking. Furthermore, given that new techniques are becoming available at MAX-lab and new user communities are attracted to the lab, a tutorial session will be added where the "nuts and bolts" of experiment setup, data acquisition and analysis are presented. The goal is to facilitate the proper matching of research problems to experimental methods available at MAX-lab, while educating potential users about the possibilities and pitfalls of an unfamiliar technique. In order to achieve these goals of a larger emphasis on science, opportunity for graduate students and training of new and existing users, the user meeting will be expanded by one day and feature three parallel sessions. International speakers will be invited to each session. This year, the tutorials and talks will be divided into Electronic Structure, Local Structure and Crystallography.
